Composite Drawings

A composite drawing is defined as any drawing made up of separate and distinct components. Though we usually think of a composite face, a composite may be done of literally anything. When something can be described and there is no useful picture, a composite sketch may provide assistance in a case. From stolen jewelry and missing pets to custom trim on a car, the list is endless. In addition, composites may:

  1. Eliminate those suspects who do not look similar.
  2. Provide a lead on a case through recognition by others.
  3. May provide new information
  4. Add additional information in the form of visual identification.
  5. Provide definitive proof of deception.

If you are a law enforcement officer and need a composite sketch, please call or fax us. (208) 682-4564. (Pacific Time) We may be able to assist you or refer you to a trained composite artist in your area.

If you have any questions on composite drawings, including standard methodology, procedure, ethical standards, results, or training please contact us.

Image Modification

Image modification is the changing of an existing image, (photo or sketch), by adding or removing such elements as beards, mustaches, glasses, hats, aging suspects, adding weight or subtracting weight, and so forth. It may be done on the sketch, painting directly on the photograph or by computer.

Facial Reconstruction

Facial reconstruction (or facial approximations) is a technique using tissue depth markers to reconstruct the face of an unknown person. It may be done with clay or as a drawing (as shown in the Jane Doe sketch at left.)

Unknown remains is the term used for unknown persons where there is enough left on the face to make a sketch based on the photograph or viewing of the body. Drawings are useful especially when the face has suffered trauma that can cause distortion. Drawings are preferred to release to the press because the actual photo of a body is too graphic.

Crime Scene Reconstruction

Preparing a case for court often requires visual exhibits to demonstrate the elements of the case. These visuals may be a room layout, drawings of the movements of various people, three-dimensional models, charts, graphs, or other visual aids. One of our specialties here at Stuart Parks Forensic Consultants is trial charts. Be watching for additions to this area.
